Dog Waste Bins

Fernwood Parish Council currently provides 21 dog waste bins, many of which are emptied twice weekly. Heavy usage bins were significantly increased in size during 2024 (now 60L), and parish bin requirements are continuously under review.

Please note that the Parish Council do not empty bins. Newark & Sherwood District Council has specialist operatives who are contracted (at a cost of around £ 3,000 per year) to empty the bins on behalf of the Parish Council.

REPORTING A FULL DOG BIN

On occasion, a bin may fill up before its scheduled emptying day. You can report this directly to NSDC by following the link HERE and selecting DOG BIN from the menu. Please report a full bin directly to the District Council. Reporting it to the Parish Council simply delays the time it takes to get a bin emptied. You can help prevent overflowing bins by locating an alternative bin or taking your dog's waste home. Given the number of dog waste bins in and around the parish, responsible dog walkers are never that far away from a bin that will take their pet's waste. Don't throw a dog waste bag on the ground, even under a full bin, as this could present a serious health risk, see below.

PLEASE DON'T FLY TIP DOG WASTE BAGS

Dog poop poses a health risk to humans and other animals. It contains over twice the harmful bacteria as human poo and also contains parasites, such as Toxocara, that can cause illness and infections. These can be transmitted through contact with contaminated soil, water, or other surfaces.

In natural habitats, such as wooded areas and parks, dog poop can also disrupt the balance of the ecosystem by introducing new pathogens into the environment. This can affect the health of plants and animals in the area and can even lead to the transmission of diseases to humans who come into contact with contaminated soil or water.

Children are particularly vulnerable to these pathogens, as they are more likely to play on the ground and put their hands in their mouths. If children come into contact with dog poop, they are at risk of contracting serious illnesses and even blindness.

If you believe it would be beneficial to install a new bin in a specific location then please email [email protected] for consideration.
